Manibus Project Description:

Manibus seeks to capture the kinetic energy, and dynamic motion of ballet as a rendered physical, perpetual image. The dancer wears a small and unobtrusive control device strapped to an arm or leg during rehearsal.  The device acts as a motion-sensing remote control that instructs the movement of a wireless robotic painting device.  Thereby, the dancer’s motions are translated and reconfigured as paint marks upon paper.  The ephemeral qualities of dance are translated into a sustaining adaptation evidenced by the visual art of painting. The process of creation becomes the resulting work of art. Due to the conceptual nature of the art, careful documentation is integral to its understanding. The project will culminate with an exhibition of the paintings produced as well as video demonstrating the creation process.
